Global Data Assimilation Products
The overarching goal of the GMAO is to enable and enhance the use of
NASA satellite observations to address the priority research
issues of NASA¹s Science Mission Directorate and national priorities
in weather and climate prediction. The GMAO currently generates
several atmospheric products on a regular basis to support
EOS instrument teams and associated field campaigns. In addition, a
climate-relevant reanalysis of the historical data stream
with a frozen assimilation system is being generated for
CERES. Some products are generated real-time for input to instrument
retrievals, others are generated in delayed mode so as to include the
most comprehensive and highest quality data streams. With
the GEOS-5 system, we will generate a historical reprocessing
from 1979 to the present, the MERRA project, that will be
a NASA contribution to the CCSP. This proposal is for GMAO to build
upon our experience in maintaining a highly successful GEOS
data product generation, to continue and enhance the current
functions and capability for product generation into the
future, for the GEOS-5 era and beyond with updated assimilation systems. The
proposal requests support for the operational infrastructure
for the generation of global research quality data assimilation products,
including: input data retrieval and quality control, product generation
and quality assurance, system
maintenance and documentation, and interface with users and
official customers to identify requirements and receive feedback
on product quality.
